RECIPIENT CONSULTATION

Some families require the assistance of a gamete donor to fulfill their dream of a family created through biology. Individuals or couples considering or planning to build their family through egg or sperm donation are often required to meet with a mental health provider in order to pursue this path to parenthood.

The purpose of this meeting is not to evaluate if a person or a couple are good people, or if they are reasonable potential parents. I like to describe this meeting as psychological informed consent. Just as your doctor would review all of the risks and benefits of a medical procedure, we meet to explore how your individual history, your relationship, and your expectations of the family you hope to have our in line with the common experiences of donor conceived families. I share with you information, research, and resources for families aided by egg and sperm donation.

These consultations are sometimes partially covered by insurance; clients are billed directly for services rendered and provided with documentation to submit claims directly to their insurance providers. Prepared reports are for clinical use only and will be sent directly to the medical center or agency managing the treatment.
